Mathias (Matt) came to Allamakee County with his parents and lived near the village of Church on Lansing Ridge. Mathias applied for citizenship at the county court in Waukon on 24 May 1859. His name was miss-recorded as "Martise", an easy error for the clerk to make upon hearing Mathias pronounced in German, probably spoken as "Ma-tee-us." He also appears in the 1860 census as "Martice," a single farmer.
Matt purchased land in section 33, Lansing Township, entering it on 10 December, 1853.
From his obituary, he "was an old and respected resident, having come to Lansing in 1852 [1853] from Altlussheim, Germany. He leaves a wife and eight children to mourn his loss. The funeral was one of the largest in the county, there being one hundred and fifty teams in the procession." Matt and his family were members of the Congregational Church.

Sophia moved to Davenport soon after her marriage to William MUELLER and resided there until her untimely death from the effects of an operation for appendicitis and jumping from a fourth story hospital window.
Sophia had been taken to the hospital where she was operated on for appendicitis. It was a serious case, as peritonitis had developed. The following evening she was still in a delirious condition and it was decided to place a special nurse in charge to care for the patient during the night. The nurse had just turned to call one of the other nurses on the floor to refill the ice water bottle when Sophia suddenly leaped out of bed and rushed to the window. The nurse tried to grab her and succeeded only in catching hold of her legs but was unable to maintain her hold and Mrs. Mueller fell to the ground below. A porch roof at the second floor broke her fall to some extent. She was picked up and returned to the building, but passed away two hours later. An examination showed that no bones were broken and it is probable that the exposure and exertion were contributing factors in her death. An inquest was held absolving the nurse in the case.
Sophia married William MUELLER. No more is known.
