The October 15, 1898 issue of the Real Estate Record and Builders Guide has an entry that is probably John, "Avenue L and Margaretta street, 2 1/2 story frame dwelling, 22x44; cost, $3,000; John Engelhorn, owner; H. C. Klemm, architect." In 1920 he was living next door to the Frederick Engelhorn family in Newark, possibly his son.
John Engelhorn & Sons were mentioned in an article in the Des Moines Register, 13 November 1966, as one of several meat packing companies that owed the U.S. Department of Agriculture a total of $2.5 million for failure to fully pay for livestock involved in 145 transactions. Of the five firms mentioned in the story, John Englehorn & Sons owed $1,077,681 to livestock feeders as a result of going out of business or bankruptcy.
