Anna Regina Barbara Hirtle (Hertel) who married Christian Ernst, settled in Nova Scotia, had 13 children and thousands of recorded descendants, all of whom are connected to the Englehorns by blood. Is anyone interested in this whole other branch, that goes by the Ernst family name? David Hopper, a descendant of Englehorns.

The torch has been passed to a new generation. Theodore David Englehorn Sr. of Salinas CA. passed away just shy of his 104th birthday at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital on May 27, 2007. This was and is the same hospital he helped found and where he was chief surgeon in his younger days. Olivia Isobel Englehorn, his great grand-daughter was born on February 6th 2007, today being her first birthday, at the same hospital in the Salinas valley. Her brother Robert Theodore Englehorn who is now four, has announced he wants to be a doctor. Let's hope he also likes to study, hard. Finally, to anyone who is interested in the deep origins of the Englehorn family tree, I have participated in the genographic project and have received information about the migration of the Englehorn "y" chromosome line. It contains some surprises. My email is markenglehorn AT aol.com All my best for a great new year. Mark David Englehorn Salinas California

My father, Edgar Moss, worked for John Engelhorn in the Newark "plant" and visited the My Royal plant in PA often, for several years as the Chief Mechanical Engineer for the refrigeration and heating of these plant facilities. While working there he invented a way and process for a humane way to slaughter pigs. The patent was owned by Engelhorn and his name is on th epatent (which expired many years ago). I do not know if any of John Engelhorn's children are old enough to rememeber him. He died (my father) suddenly in 1961. I would like to know if any of the family has a copy of the patent which is of some significance to our family. Larry Moss Freehold, NJ 732-431-2867

Hello Engelhorn Famiy, My name is Lori Iseli. I am married to Arthur Iseli. My husband is the great, great grandson of Christina Margaretha Engelhorn. I am just beginning my family searchs. The Allamakee County Historical Society helped me to make the connection. I am intrested in obtaining the Englehorn Family Book. My husband's family has not kept the famiy history, so it was a rush to see the photo in the book of Christina. I later found out that thru the Englehorn book that my husband is related to the Kerndt's, Our neighbors across the road. Small world. Thank you for having this information availble for future generations. Your very extended family, Lori & Arthur Iseli

Dear Family Engelhorn, I would just like to ask if anyone knows Miss Leidemarie Engelhorn, living sometimes in New York City or in Germany. She was my first customer at the Hermes store, Madison Avenue, when I lived in New York City. I have fond memories of her in 1999! How could I get in touch with her. Does Miss Engelhorn belong to your family? Sincerely, Erwin van der Spek Rotterdam The Netherlands

I am still living in Montery County along with my father Theodore David Englehorn, My brother John Theodore Englehorn and my son Robert Theodore Englehorn. My wife Lyla and I are expecting in Februrary, so soon we'll have another name to add to the roles. Thanks for maintaining this great website!

Translation of the message below from Google; leaves something to be desired: Hello from Kiedrich in Rhine gau, Hessen, Germany Maine nut/mother is born Schlotthauer. The oldest ancestor was born, approx. in Darmstadt 1824. We look for still older relatives. Now we have information from the USA according to which we still another so far uncle mentioned Christian born around 1880 in Mainz Mombach would have. Therefore I have Christian Schlotthauer married Engelhorn 1746 in your list found. There is proof of descendants of Christian Schlotthauer.

This is a great web-site. I am one of the daughters to Thelma June (Wiggers) Matson. My grandmother was Wilhelmina (Engelhorn) Wiggers which she is found under The Peter Line. I have been married for 30 years to a great husband and have two wonderful children and daughter and a son. We have two wonderful granddaughters. My husband and I lived in Belgium for two years and visited Germany quit a bit and we were going to start researching my family but moved back to the states before we could get started. So this was great seeing some of the places in Germany that we are decedents of. We are now living out side of the Chicago area. Rebecca Ann (Matson) Geskey

Hello,

I've been admiring your extensive website. I'm not related to the Engelhorn family but after the extensive research I've done on your family, I almost feel related. The reason I'm posting this here is because I'm an assistant curator and provenance researcher working for a museum in the United States, I am currently trying to retrace the history of an altarpiece by the German artist Bartel Bruyn, since our museum is interested in purchasing it. However we are trying to get a clear understanding of its history. I've managed to retrace its history almost completely, but I would like to know if there is anyone out there related or not to the Engelhorn family who would know more about Mrs. Marie-Friederike Joerger Engelhorn's (7.5.1866-13.12.1953) art collection. She was in possession of the altarpiece while she was living in Feldalfing am Starnberger See. She was living there with her Son Fritz Carl Engelhorn and his wife Annemarie Clemm Engelhorn. Of course I will supply more information privately. I will be very grateful to anyone who would be able to give me more information regarding this particular painting since our other sources have run dry. You can email me at my personal email address: hketsdevries AT hotmail.com

Thank you very much,

Best regards, H. Kets de Vries

Here is what we know in reply to Brent Kloc (see next message below) The first recorded use of the crest was by brothers Johann Georg(1667-1742) and Johann Jakob (1671-1742) Engelhorn. Georg was mayor of Hockenheim, Germany from 1711-1742 and Jakob was landlord of the "Guldene Engel" inn at that time. (See the ancestor album pages on our web site for a picture of the inn, now a German historic landmark.) Their father, Johann Georg (Hans) Engelhorn was a citizen, Gerichtsverwandter, and tax or customs collector in Hockenheim. He built the inn the "Guldene Engel" in 1690 for his second son, Johann Jakob. He was the first officially documented customs collector in Hockenheim. It was not uncommon for prominent citizens of the time to have coats of arms even tho they were not of the nobility. In researching the family history we have not been able to discover a family motto which persisted through the generations. However, one Eduard Engelhorn (1830-1907) was a lawyer and government official in Mannheim, who had as his family motto "Fortiter in re. Suaviter in modo." "Strongly in deed, gently in manner."

The design of our crest is based on a pun on the family name. In German it known as a "Redende Wappen," -- a "talking coat of arms, which "speaks out" the name. The angel on the helmet is Engel in German. The horns (also horn in German) complete the pun. We think our name comes from Switzerland where there is a series of peaks named Engelhorn near Meiringen. A sharp peak or alp is also known as a horn as in Matterhorn, Weishorn, etc.(Again, see the picture on the first ancestor album page.) There apparently are no restrictions on the use of the coat of arms by anyone who bears the Engelhorn/Englehorn name. The color scheme on the crest as used on our web pages is correct according to rules of heraldry as far as we can tell. The best and most well-known use of the crest is by the Engelhorn und Sturm chain of clothing and sporting goods stores in Germany, headquartered in Mannheim.

Hi, I am Scott Winston Teal, a genealogist and descendant of the Engelhorn family through Susanna Hertel who married George Fancy at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1755. Susanna's mother was the child of Johann Jacob Engelhorn (1671). I have tracked hundreds of descendants from George & Susanny Fancy. These people belong to a significant historical group known as the Foreign Protestants. Maria Barbara Elisabeth Engelhorn was one of this group along with her husband Johann Michael Schmidt. Only recently was it learned that Barbara was an Engelhorn. Her maiden name was not widely known although had been recorded in Schmidt's personal bible. This is a fantastic website which displays the relationship between the American, Canadian and German sides of the families. George & Susanna Fancy had a son Johann Georg Fancy who in turn had a son Johann Zenas Fancy in 1793, my gggg grandfather.

I also have Engelhorn ancestry. We go back thru the Nova Scotia side. I've been to Leimen, Germany and my info came from the church records and a book: "Familien in Leimen 1677-1900" Kurt Frei, which I bought in Leimen at the Rathaus (Town Hall). I'm also in contact with a Engelhorn who's family went to Poland and he's trying to find his links. Stan Card, Tampa, Florida

Hello Roland,

I assume that you live in Germany and understand German, since you have an email address with T-Online. Your message, which I found today is very interesting, since my grandfather also lived in Poland and the connection to Germany is missing up to now. I know only that it resulted in a search in the context of the Ariernachweises that the father, grandfather or great-grandfather of my grandfather from and/or from the area from Speyer were to originate. My grandfather and father come out de approximately around Lodz. Since also your Vorfahern would originate from Poland it me to interest whether these were settled around Lodz also in the area and whether you already found a connection to Germany. A message of you would make me happy much. Yours sincerely Bernd angel horn

The history of the angel horn families is again and again interesting for me. This Websites is a well investigated, successful contribution to the Familiensaga. Congratulations.

Since 1980 I am by the way owner of the house "Gueldener angel" in Hockenheim, one of the original principal firms of the Famile. The house was restored in long and laborious work by me. Today a Greek restaurant with Gewoelbekeller, a small shop, a practice for tooth surgery and dwellings are in the house. In the year 1996 the descriptor "cultural monument of special meaning" was lent to the "Gueldenen angel".

There is relevant literature from the book of local history and geography of the city Hockenheim over the house and the family angel horn. Author is Mr. Ernst Brauch.

Hi Jim, the site looks great. Thanks for the effort you put into keeping it this way.

Has anyone informed you that my Mother, Dorothy (Englehorn) Weber, passed away one year ago tomorrow, June 5, 2001? I understand my Uncle, Robert Englehorn, has been in touch with you over the years. Perhaps he told you about it. Uncle Bob is the last of the four children of George Englehorn.

Thanks for keeping us informed.

Mark Weber.

I think this is a wonderful website. I wish I knew half of the people that have made this happen. It is so important to me to find my heritage. My dad, Fred Engelhorn died in 1993 and my grandmother died long before that. Her name was Emma L Engelhorn. My dad worked in his fathers business forever, John Engelhorn and Sons in Newark, New Jersey. I would love to meet some of my decendents. Thank you for taking the time.

Enjoyed looking at your site. I have a couple of Engelhorns in my ZAHN genealogy.

I have a couple of questions on some ZAHNs you have listed in your webpage genealogy, though.

I noticed that you have two ZAHNs on your webpages that do not exist in my database. One is Eva Elisabetha ZAHN, b. 1750, d. 11 May 1784. I have an Eva Elisabetha born in 1749, but not in 1750. I am wondering what your source is for this information. In the records of the Evangelisch-Reformierten Kirche there is no Eva Elisabetha ZAHN born in 1750. Is there a Catholic ZAHN branch? I have not yet searched any Catholic records. Most of the ZAHNs are Ev.-Ref.

You also have a Marie Elizabeth ZAHN, daughter of Friedrich Michael ZAHN and Maria Magdalena SCHRANCK, on 5 Mar 1764 in Hockenheim. The only Maria Elisabetha ZAHN born to a Friedrich Michael ZAHN and Maria Magdalena SCHRANCK was born in 16 Mar 1743, unless, again, this is another non-Ev.-Ref. family with the same names. I am curious as to your source for this one, too.

I look forward to hearing from you concerning this. BTW, I have the microfilm of the Hockenheim records and have been to Hockenheim several times for research. I speak fluent German and can read the old handwriting. I would be happy to help you with some Engelhorn names in Hockenheim if you want. Just let me know.

Brian Zahn

Question to Roland Fabian, because your email-address does not work: Hallo Roland, ich vermute, dass Sie in Deutschland leben und Deutsch verstehen, da Sie eine Email-Adresse bei t-online haben.

Dear, My name is Franck Guillory. My grand ma (mum's mother) is Francine Engelhorn, her father Frederic Marcel Engelhorn born in 1898 in Paris. The family story says that our ancestor in fact my great great grand father left Germany after some curious stories. Would you have anything which could help to discover the truth?

Thank you so much and congratulation for your site.

Greetings from Shanghai, China! My name is Michael Zargarov. I'm originally from Houston, Texas. While a student at the University of Texas in 1981, I met a Mrs. Dorothy Schlemmer Stricker. We became very close friends. "Aunt" Dorothy was younger sister to the mother of Curt Engelhorn's mother. She was a Schlemmer, born at Heidelberg, and lived in the United States when her Father Nicholas Schlemmer was Post-Master of Austin Texas in the 1900-1920 period. As far as I know, Curt's sister Elizabeth still lives on a ranch in west Texas. Dorothy used to tell me of visiting the Engelhorn family in Garmisch-Patenkirche, near Munich, in the 1920's and 1930's. The Engelhorns had some famous neighbors. Richard Strauss, the composer of "Die Fledermaus", and Rudolf Hess (Hitler's adjutant) were neighbors. Dorothy told me of attending Curt Engelhorn's 50th Birthday celebration. It was held in a castle and was attended by the cream of German society. He gave party favors to all who attended. Dorothy's was an alligator handbag.

I just thought you all might be interested. Best Wishes, Michael Zargarov

This is a very impressive web page and a great service to the family. I am John R. Engelhorn my dad is Oscar Engelhorn and we lived on the farm across the road from the Lansing Ridge Cemetary until 1947. We live in Santa Rosa, Ca. now but visited the farm about 6 years ago and were disappointed to see that the house had been destroyed but were happy to see that the barn (built in 1877) was still there. Oscar is 90 and still going strong.

I am interested in the Gruber line in your family tree. Very good information on the web site. Wish I could do such things. Are you interested in donating one of your books to the Allamakee County Historical Society? We are starting a genealogy deptartment at the Allamakee County Museum. We would like as many copies of family hitories that we can find with connection to Allamakee county.

I've been to Leimen searching the church records, but they didn't have Maria Barbara Elisabeth Englehorn's parents names. She is listed in "Families of Leimen 1677-1900" by Kurt Frei with both of her husbands. This is one of my German lines. Want to thank you for putting this on the web. This is great!! is it o.k. if I link this site to the family reunion web site? btw, I've been going through old family pictures, and can probably send you some if you're interested. Keep up the good work--this is soooo cool! Susan (Englehorn) Marrier

Thanks for the web site - I especially liked seeing pictures from the past reunions. I could provide a caption for one of the pics from the Breckenridge reunion which shows my mom and almost all of her cousins from the Thomas Line. Also, I have a picture of my son and Uncle Ted, who were the youngest and oldest, respectively, attendees at the Asilomar reunion - is JPEG format too big too send in an e-mail? Finally, I am sure that an explanation has been given before, but I would like to see something posted on this website about Englehorn v. Engelhorn and any explanation for how the spelling got changed (my grandmother was Erma Englehorn Fenn). Thanks, Brenda White

Jim,

This is fantastic, you should be extremely proud. Thanks also to Jim Englehorn for mentioning it in the newsletter. Any information I can get on the Engelhorn family is truly appreciated. It's funny, I didn't know until very recently that there were any other Engelhorns except for my local family here in Ohio. If anyone reading this can help with family background I would really be grateful. My grandfather just recently passed away...Carl Engelhorn who lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa. I'll look the site over more, but it's really great. Thanks
